Kaziranga national park, homeland of the Great Indian One Horned Rhinoceros, is one of the largest protected wildlife areas in India. It is inhabited by the world’s largest population of one-horned rhinoceroses, as well as many mammals, including tigers, elephants, panthers and bears, and thousands of birds.
The park is located on the bank of great brahmaputra river in the far of north east india. The park lies in an area of 430 sq kms between golaghat and nagaon district of Assam. It included – 51.92{4962d8e2c73ee88aad7125033d5658fd247043cd5a624d71ac5e800504586b0b} of grass land, 29.13{4962d8e2c73ee88aad7125033d5658fd247043cd5a624d71ac5e800504586b0b} of moist mixed deciduous forest, 7.21{4962d8e2c73ee88aad7125033d5658fd247043cd5a624d71ac5e800504586b0b} sandy area, 6 .62{4962d8e2c73ee88aad7125033d5658fd247043cd5a624d71ac5e800504586b0b} of water bodies, and 5.21{4962d8e2c73ee88aad7125033d5658fd247043cd5a624d71ac5e800504586b0b} of swampy/ marshy area of parks.
The park was first established in 1908, as a reserve forest. It is declared as game sanctuary in 1917 and open for visitors in 1938. The park upgraded as a wildlife sanctuary in 1950 and announced a national park in 1974. The park was enlisted in the list of world heritage site in December 1985. In august 2006, the park is announced as a tiger reserve under the project tiger scheme.
Wildlife in Kaziranga National Park:
Besides one horned rhinos (Rhinoceros unicornis) kaziranga have a large population of tigers, elephants, leopards, Leopard cat, Buffalo, Gaur, Sloth bear, Black bear, Malayan Sun bear, Hoolock, Rhesus macaque, Common Langur, Capped Langur, Swamp deer, Sambar, Barking Deer, Hog deer, Common otter, Clawless otter, Wild boar, Python etc
Kaziranga national park is also know for rare and exotic birding paradise. Some commonly birds generally seen in the park are little egret, tuffed duck, fish eagle, spot billed pelican, darter, heron, brahmini duck, pied hornbill brahmini duck, white necked adjutant stork, grey partridge, pheasant, cormorant, black necked adjutant stork, bengal florican, lesser adjutant stork, and jungle fowl, etc.

Air: The nearest airport is jorhat, just 97 kms away from the park. Another airport is guwahati, the capital of assam, is just 270 kms away form the park.
Rail: The nearest railway station is furcating, 75 kms away from the park.
Road: An extensive network of roads connects Kaziranga to other notable cities in Assam. Guwahati, Tezpur and many other cities are connected to Kaziranga by road.
